The Fokker Scourge article[edit]

I am having a few problems with an enthusiastic but at times very dogmatic editorial colleague on the Fokker Scourge article. In fact, things have reached a pass where some second opinions might be useful. The specific question he is hammering at the moment is that we shouldn't ever say "No. 1 Squadron RAF" (in spite of that being the usual way of putting it) but "1 Squadron" (on the grounds that the "No." is redundant). I wouldn't object to an occasional omission of the "No.", if only for elegant variation, but he has been going right through the article wiping every instance and claiming that "Wikipedia is not a source" (which is true enough, but nothing to do with the case). The gentleman concerned has been making dozens of other (mostly very pettifogging) changes to the article - a few have been genuine improvements, and most at least acceptable alternatives but some of have made clear text obscure, even meaningless. I have let everything he has done that is at all acceptable stand, but the really bad ones I've had to change - usually with a new version rather than a provocative revert.

I was wondering, if you have a moment, if you'd like to have a little look at the Fokker Scourge talk page (go straight to the bottom if you like) and tell me, either here, on my talk page, or even on the talk page of the article if you want to actually buy into the discussion, if I'm being totally unreasonable and should just give up. This is (for a WWI aviation article) quite a high traffic one - and I'd like to leave it in reasonable shape. At least readable, and plain in meaning (two things I value far above brevity for its own sake). --Soundofmusicals (talk) 01:22, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2 (oleo undercarriage).[edit]

The oleo strut of the F.E.2's undercarriage is of course well known - and well referenced. Just two sources that come to mind are:

  • Hare, Paul R. The Royal Aircraft Factory. London: Putnam, 1990. ISBN 0-85177-843-7, pp.208-209.
  • Cheesman, E.F., ed. Fighter Aircraft of the 1914–1918 War. Letchworth, UK: Harleyford, 1960. pp. 44-45.

I have nonetheless run into a bit of conflict with someone with interests from "a later war" who disputes this - perhaps on the authority of works documenting more modern "oleo struts". I wonder if you could apply an impartial eye on this one? --Soundofmusicals (talk) 23:54, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Überkanone"[edit]

Hi Georgejdorner,

in the articles Karl Plauth and Flying ace, the term "Überkanone(n)" appears. I can't find it anywhere else and was surprised about the term as well, but I am not knowledgeable about the topic. It has apparently already been discussed at Talk:Flying_ace and Talk:Flying_ace/Archive_1#Translation_of_the_word_.22.C3.9Cberkanone.22. Today, Hamilton McWhorter III is linked from the Main Page, in "Did you know?", prominently, with an image of a golden medal. That's how I found the "Flying ace" article, and how I found the term "Überkanone". I'm sure others will, too; would you mind if I remove it as it does seem to lack a reference?

Best regards,

G'day, George, I hope you are well. I notice that you have created the GA review page for this article even though you are the nominator; was this an accident? It isn't usual for the nominator to create the review page, and often this will mean that the review will stagnate for quite some time as potential reviewers will think that the article is already under review (when it actually isn't). If it was an accident, do you wish for me to use my admin tools to delete the review page for you as a mistake? This will put the article back into the pool of unreviewed articles and allow someone else to pick up the review when they are ready. Please let me know what works for you. May 2021: The very recalcitrant user you mentioned[edit]

Short of an actual troll or vandal, I have never before seen such a stubborn user as User:DagneyGirl on Wikipedia. The manner in which they protest in fractured English and then conclude with "so be it" is indicative of an inability to work with others. I hope you and the various editors who take exception to their attitude, communication and editing habits are able to have them censured. Such behavior would have normally incurred at least one block by now.--Quisqualis (talk) 20:33, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that you have written 100 Did You Knows and no one has noticed (no award for 25 or 50!). That can never be the case, thousands of people will have seen your DYKs and thousands will have read your work about military operations. You have improved the front page, the DYK project and to top it all, helped to build an amazing free educational resource. So thanks - people notice. Friedrich Hefty[edit]

Hey there,

I've looked a bit more into Hefty's name being 'Friedrich' or 'Frigyes'. I found the following: in the book "Austro-Hungarian Albatros Aces of World War 1" he appears with the name 'Friedrich' and I've also found a newspaper article from the Detroit Free Press from 1965 talking about his death, and there he is also mentioned with the name 'Friedrich' (well technically, he's mentioned as 'Frederik'). However, in his book "Repülők előre!" that he wrote in 1940, he appears as 'Hefty Frigyes' (Hungarian way of writing the name, with the surname before the first name). So it does seem that he used both versions of his name, but still couldn't find what his exact birth name was. But I do think this should be mentioned in the article, maybe as a note that he used both 'Friedrich' and 'Frigyes'? Alin2808 (talk) 12:19, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Template:one source: Citing only one source is not a violation of any policy. I see no mention in our local consensus at WP:MILMOS#SOURCES, so I would not disqualify an article on this basis. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 05:38, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
